Nathan Dougherty is considered to be the founding father of the University of Tennessee sports programs. It was during Dougherty's tenure as an associate professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Tennessee that President Ayres appointed him as the interim chairman of the the University's Athletic Council. Dr. Dougherty's mark at the University of Tennessee began with his design of Sheilds-Watkins Field and the hiring of a football coach whose name is University of Tennessee football: Robert Reese Neyland. Their belief that learning is "an attitude, a method, and an approach" is still applied to our student athletes today.
